The Saint Catherine Church

The time of construction of the church dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria is not known. In the 13th century the church had probably the role of a chapel, which later has been rebuilt. The territory of the temple was donated by the Csibi family to the church. Data about the tower of the church are dated from 1653, when it was renewed and its nave expanded. In 1711, the apostolic visitation describes the full equipment of the church. Further improvement works to heighten it have been made in 1712. Two years later, in 1714 it was destroyed by fire. During the renovation between 1756 and 1757 the nave was extended and completely rebuilt. In the back yard there is two bastion tower (watch tower) and a sundial reminding of bygone times. The monument was originally a fortified church.

On 8th of June 1786 Transylvanian bishop Battyányi Ignanc, consecrated three altars. The main altar was consecrate in the honor of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, the right side altar in the honor of Saint Sebastian and the left side altar in the honor of the Holy Family. The statue of Saint John can be seen over the entrance gate. The interior of the church is Baroque style. The tower is 35 meters high, in which there are visible traces of a large lancet window walled up. kep1

In 1996 the church was renovated both inside and outside. On the second half of the XIX-th century, the church became too small for the Chatolic community which had nearly reached 6,000 souls. According to Domus History, on bigger festive occasions the church and its courtyard became so full with the believers that they couldn’t move. So, in 1891 the board of representatives decided to build a new church that is worthy of the village’s good reputation. Traditionally, in the honor of the Catherine church, the Saint Catherine’s ceremony takes place every year, on the 25th of November.
